The truth is, in our case, it’s true. We’ve been packing everything but the kitchen sink for many years\ud83d\ude0a. We literally pack up all our belongings and take them with us. Over and over again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s why I’ve decided to share with you the ultimate list of equipment for a long trip or vacation abroad, with or without the children. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The list includes necessary equipment, recommended equipment that is fun to have, and a whole suitcase full of tips. I promise you’ll find things here that no one else has written about and upgrade your next vacation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But before we get started: Dear\u00a0men,\u00a0we take the whole house because that’s how we are. It’s in\u00a0our\u00a0DNA. And it makes us feel bad when we must apologize for it. So just accept it. With a smile and understanding and love and think only how\u00a0thankful\u00a0your arms and chest muscles\u00a0will be\u00a0\ud83d\ude0a.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Holy Trinity:<\/strong>\u00a0 <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Backpack \u2013 shoes \u2013 everyday bag  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are the cornerstones of every trip. If you’re on a budget, these are the three things that are most important to invest in. These three things will dictate your quality of life on a daily basis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Backpack\u00a0or<\/strong>\u00a0wheeled suitcase?<\/strong>\u00a0 <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For a trip to the East or South\/Central America, whether it’s a short vacation or a long-term journey, I overwhelmingly recommend backpacks every time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take one large and one medium backpack per adult, and a backpack per child (the size of the bag depends on the age and size of the child, of course). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Europe, the USA, and other Western destinations\u00a0either option is viable. I still think\u00a0backpacks tend to be the more comfortable option, as there will always be trains, apartment buildings and hotels that don’t have elevators or escalators. Your choice will depend to some extent on the type of trip you are planning.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With young children, it’s important that your hands are as free as possible.<\/strong> <\/strong>And it’s also important that whoever is pulling a suitcase can also pick it up when necessary.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I recommend that every child<\/strong> should<\/strong> look after<\/strong> their own case<\/strong> or backpack<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This case is their own private ‘space’ for the entire duration of his vacation. For this reason, it’s important that each child carries with them personal items that hold meaning to them, and that will provide a sense of stability, privacy, and independence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tip: For children who are particularly sensitive or who need stability, I suggest you also take a ‘transitional object’ :-).\u00a0It might be a little mobile, a special dream catcher, or anything that\u00a0they associate with their room at home. Hang it wherever the child sleeps during your vacation or trip.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In our case, every child has their own case. The two older children have backpacks, and the little one has a trolley suitcase. Each has their own towel, toiletries bag, flashlight and more. (Read on for details. .) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to buy<\/strong>: As much as the Internet can offer amazing options, I always recommend buying your bags in a physical store. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shoes<\/strong>\u00a0 <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The biggest tip I can give you about this is:<\/strong> don’t buy new shoes especially for your trip\/vacation. They need to be broken in and comfortable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

New shoes might look nice, but they usually cause blisters and cuts. Flip flops can be bought on the road though! (Especially in Brazil, where the Havaianas flipflops are world famous. They’re durable, comfy, worn by all the locals and much cheaper in Brazil than anywhere else\u2026) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flipflops aside, for a few years now, the girls and I have only been wearing Sketchers. They’re incredibly comfortable and we can walk in them for days without our feet or legs hurting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How many pairs<\/strong>? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take one pair for a daily walk for each of you, and flip-flops\/sandals (waterproof) for each. Of course, if you’re planning on trekking, take some off-road shoes. Make sure they are worn in before you set off! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to buy: If these are a type of shoe you\u2019re not accustomed to, I recommend going to a physical store. If you\u2019re buying shoes you are already accustomed to wearing, it’s better to buy online because the selection is bigger, and the price is usually lower. But even so, don’t set out with brand-new shoes. Buy them with enough time to do some \u2018breaking in\u2019 walks first.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day\u00a0Bag<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I think it\u2019s important for each child to have their own little bag. (size and model obviously depends on age…) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t have to take all your bags every time you leave the hotel or the guesthouse for the day. That’s why I recommend a day bag for each of you, as well as slightly larger backpacks or cases for taking on board flights, for overnight trips, etc.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to buy: The internet has some increasingly good options. Here are some I like: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve been\u00a0using\u00a0this\u00a0THULE<\/a>\u00a0case for two years. It’s a little big for every day, and I mostly use it when we go on\u00a0short trips away.\u00a0I just love that the case can\u00a0adapt to\u00a0the\u00a0number\u00a0of things I have to take. It can adjust in size, so\u00a0I have room for a jacket when I feel like it, and when I wear the jacket, I can make the case smaller. I\u00a0also find it very beautiful. You can take a peek and see for yourself.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also love TIMBUK2 bags, such\u00a0as this bag<\/a>, which\u00a0can also be made larger or smaller according to your needs<\/strong>.\u00a0TOPO recently came out with some beautiful backpacks<\/a>. But the\u00a0biggest\u00a0hype\u00a0right now\u00a0is around\u00a0NOMATIC’s amazing backpacks.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Okay, we’re done with the Holy Trinity.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baby carrier or stroller? <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Let’s completely resolve the dilemma. A baby carrier is, to me, a necessity. It will keep a baby or toddler close and always within your sight, leaving you free to watch the other children, read the signs at the train station, or look for a nice restaurant where you can finally sit down after a day walking through busy streets. I highly recommend a backpack-style carrier because they\u2019re comfortable, fit into a bag and don\u2019t take up half the hotel room. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, there’s no wavering about a carrier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deciding whether to take a stroller is a matter of what you\u2019re used to. Do you use one every day?  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is the destination you are travelling to stroller friendly? Are you planning long walks and long days without breaks? Does your baby like to sit in a stroller? Are you renting a car? Are you planning to visit attractions where queues will be long? If the answer is yes, then take a stroller.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are you planning lots of trips, on various types of transport (think buses, rickshaws, ferries, trains…)? Are you bringing more than two suitcases? Do you like traveling light and being spontaneous? If the answer is yes, then you better ditch the stroller. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What to take in the big\u00a0backpack\/suitcase \u2013 7\u00a0non-negotiables\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

1. Towel\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m a big fan of lightweight travel towels, which dry quickly and can be hung comfortably so they don’t fall or fly off the railing of the balcony. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to buy: Online. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look at these, for example: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A\u00a0‘Discovery’ towel<\/a> is both very soft and cozy and great for travel.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This\u00a0JML\u00a0towel,<\/a> comes in a package of two, both\u00a0of which are good and big,\u00a0and\u00a0I like that they\u00a0come in\u00a0vibrant colors like pink and purple:-).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And here’s a towel especially for kids<\/a> \u2013 it’s a special\u00a0sand-proof\u00a0towel (yes!), suitable for both beach and bathing,\u00a0and it comes in cheerful prints.\u00a0perfect for traveling with your little ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/a>\"\"\n\n\n\n

My recommendation:<\/strong>\u00a0These towels\u00a0are good quality and go for around\u00a0$10-$20, which is much cheaper than\u00a0most physical stores would charge, so it clearly makes financial sense to buy them online. Just make sure you\u2019re ordering the size you need!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.\u00a0A charging\u00a0unit with multiple sockets<\/strong>, which also has\u00a0a decent\u00a0length\u00a0cable\u00a0and is\u00a0small and foldable, is\u00a0a must for any trip.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m using\u00a0this\u00a0one<\/a>,\u00a0and each of the children has\u00a0one\u00a0too, each a different color. This product is incredibly\u00a0convenient and\u00a0comes with a small case (in\u00a0which I also\u00a0store\u00a0some USB cables and\u00a0a mains\u00a0adapter into).\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0one of the objects we use\u00a0the\u00a0most.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look\u00a0(I have the pink one…):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/a>\"\"\n\n\n\n

3. Folding Lamp<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, this is a thing. It’s especially useful for those going out into the wilds, or on a remote camping trip, but it\u2019s useful in other situations too. Bring lamps for as many rooms\/tents as you plan to stay in. Sometimes there’s a power outage of a few hours and these lamps are much more pleasing to the eye than the phone’s flashlight. Sometimes there are no night lamps in the guesthouse and in cases like this I pull out the lamps. It makes a big difference <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look at this\u00a0one:<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\nThis is a lamp that takes up almost no space (it folds into a flat position) and is charged by USB or solar. \n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/a>\"\"\n\n\n\n

\n\nThen there’s this one, which doubles as a backup battery and is waterproof: \n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/a>\"\"\n\n\n\n

4.\u00a0Luggage organizers in different sizes\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether you’re\u00a0traveling with\u00a0a backpack or a suitcase,\u00a0these organizers\u00a0are\u00a0an absolute must for keeping everything handy.\u00a0For a few years now,\u00a0the girls and I have been unable to pack without them.\u00a0It’s convenient and makes it easy to quickly get everything you’re looking for.\u00a0Honestly it\u2019s a game changer.\u00a0Here’s an amazing set <\/a>that also includes a toiletry bag and a document case (not cheap, but worth the investment if budget allows..).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And there\u2019s this one, in a million colors. $25 for the purple, $20 for gray: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/a>\"\"\n\n\n\n

You’ll also find\u00a0many similar\u00a0organizers, for\u00a0less than US$20.\u00a0 <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Toiletries\u00a0bag\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only buy toiletries bags that can be hung up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to buy: Unequivocally online. Look at what a\u00a0huge\u00a0selection there\u00a0is\u00a0:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/a>\"\"\n\n\n\n<\/a>\"\"\n\n\n\n<\/a>\"\"\n\n\n\n

The prices of all these are\u00a0between $16 and $26<\/strong>.\u00a0I bought a bag like this about six years ago, in a cool, expensive store in Saigon. For a few days I debated whether or not to buy, because I really wanted to, but it was relatively expensive. I ended up buying. And I use it to this\u00a0day, so it was actually\u00a0one of\u00a0my\u00a0most successful purchases.\u00a0Convenient and simple and accessible. Each of the girls has one, too\u00a0\ud83d\ude0a\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tip: <\/strong>If you’re going on a pampering vacation, take a few bath treats for yourself\u00a0and the\u00a0kids \ud83d\ude0a.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My\u00a0travel\u00a0recommendation: Take a\u00a0lightweight\u00a0projector\u00a0so\u00a0that\u00a0you can\u00a0screen movies for\u00a0the\u00a0kids,\u00a0and some fun games for the car\/restaurant\/quiet time in the room.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

6.\u00a0Lightweight chopping board\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is convenient\u00a0to use everywhere\u00a0for\u00a0cutting\u00a0fruit, making\u00a0sandwiches\u00a0or tasting\u00a0the cheeses you bought at the deli. When the kids were little, we played games on it, we\u00a0made\u00a0plasticine, and we put puzzles together. I’m\u00a0including it in the\u00a0packing essentials. It doesn’t take up space and doesn’t weigh\u00a0anything,\u00a0but makes life a lot simpler\u00a0for parents.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the way – to complete the kit: a cutting knife (with a protective lid) and a fruit\/vegetable peeler\u2013 also go into the backpack or suitcase <\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Folding Bowl\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve been carrying one of these since we left our home country. You wouldn\u2019t even know it was in the bag at all, it\u2019s so light and compact. Recently I also bought them for each of the children, because it is always useful \ud83d\ude42saves a lot of time and money. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are some good examples on Amazon: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/a>\"\"\n\n\n\n<\/a>\"\"\n\n\n\n

And this\u00a0one\u00a0comes as a set, with a\u00a0cup and cutlery:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/a>\"\"\n\n\n\n

It’s also a good idea to take some dish-washing liquid in a small bottle, and a small sponge \u2013 this one helps, and in general it’s also advisable to wash the cups that are provided in your hotel room before use. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And one last tip:<\/strong> If you’re traveling with children of milk-tooth age, don’t forget to take a special little box in case they fall off their teeth during your holiday. If you’re traveling and your kids have wobbly teeth (or are likely to have wobbly teeth)\u00a0then\u00a0it\u2019s nice to carry\u00a0a letter and a gift\u00a0from the tooth fairy\u00a0(or whatever is the custom in\u00a0your family).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Little Gali lost 5 teeth (two on the same day!!) during a 40-day Mongolian adventure in the middle of nowhere! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What to pack in the smaller bag: <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

1. <\/strong>Flashlight<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I love that each member of our family has their own flashlight. And that doesn’t include the flashlight on the phone\ud83d\ude0a.. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are those who like headlamps, but lately I’ve been preferring the flashlights you can plug into a USB, or the solar-charged ones. It’s such a relief not to have to carry or buy batteries all the time \ud83d\ude42 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The internet offers lots of great options. Here’s\u00a0a good\u00a0one.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. <\/strong>A <\/strong>mandatory <\/strong>laptop\/tablet case for each traveler.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look\u00a0what\u00a0lovely\u00a0cases\u00a0I found here.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Organizing case for cables and chargers<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

not an absolute necessity, but certainly makes life on the road much more comfortable when there is one\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Backup headphones<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

especially\u00a0helpful\u00a0during transitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We spend a lot of hours on long commutes, and\u00a0the\u00a0kids like to listen to music, podcasts, or watch videos. That’s why I’m not taking a chance. Parents of adolescents \u2013 doubly important. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

5.\u00a0Walkie Talkie – for\u00a0when you are out with\u00a0young children.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be sure to buy that a walkie talkie with\u00a0a wide range on one side, and legal for free use, on the other :-). Another important thing to pay attention to is the life of the battery. I’ve bought a few over the years, and especially like these\u00a0ones<\/a>, which are similar to ones we bought in Bangkok. Not only can you keep in touch with the kids when you’re sitting having coffee and they’re playing in the park next door \ud83d\ude42,\u00a0but they\u2019re also a lot\u00a0of fun.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. First Aid Kit<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Tablet\/phone charger<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. Camera (preferably waterproof..)<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9<\/strong>.\u00a0Makeup bag<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 I don’t usually wear makeup but I like to carry the basics, and this\u00a0lovely makeup bag<\/a> I\u00a0found can be used for jewelry too.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. Hygiene products<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Very important!! Hand sanitizer gel, wet wipes and \u2018paper soap\u2019 sheets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

11. Water bottle<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of my hobbies when I go into a travel shop is to check what’s new in\u00a0terms of water bottles,\u00a0because we use them a lot,\u00a0so I\u00a0find myself buying\u00a0them\u00a0at least two or three times a year. Here is a bottle with a charcoal filter<\/a> and also a cool bottle that\u00a0can be folded up<\/a> to go into your pocket when it\u2019s empty. And\u00a0then there\u2019s\u00a0Mizu’s\u00a0classic\u00a0bottle<\/a>, which comes with a filter and a straw.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

12. A reusable drinking straw<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(unless you want to drink your mojito from a cardboard straw that crumples down within a few minutes..).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This\u00a0is a cool\u00a0telescopic folding straw<\/a>,\u00a0and also\u00a0check out this\u00a0family set of lovely stainless steel straws<\/a> (with a cleaning brush)\u00a0which come with a handy carrying case..\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

12. Hat and sunscreen – always!<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

13. Mosquito repellent – always!<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

14. Small folding umbrella <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I like everybody to have a compact umbrella in their bag,\u00a0especially since they\u00a0became\u00a0old enough and started\u00a0to go out\u00a0alone. Sounds silly, but an umbrella can be a real life saver<\/a> when the heavens open.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those last three items <\/strong>are\u00a0related to the fact that we cannot predict the future \u2013 even the very near future.\u00a0I learned this\u00a0the hard way, which is why my\u00a0I strongly urge\u00a0you to always carry these things.\u00a0There’s no telling when you’ll be stuck in the blazing sun without you anticipating it, and even the umbrella can come in\u00a0handy\u00a0as a sunshade for small children.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

tip:<\/strong> If you’re\u00a0planning to\u00a0visit the ‘Forbidden City’ in Beijing, for example, or the Colosseum in Rome,\u00a0or\u00a0indeed\u00a0any very popular attraction\u00a0where long queues are inevitable, make sure you\u00a0bring these things, plus plenty of drinking water.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

15. Pack of cards\/family travel game<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These can help pass the time when boredom might otherwise set in and lead to quarrelling (waiting for food in a restaurant, waiting for a bus, waiting for a flight, etc…) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

16.<\/strong>\u00a0One very important recommendation (last but certainly not least):\u00a0Tracker stickers.<\/strong>\u00a0Everybody worries about losing valuables during their trip, so I really advise you to get some of\u00a0these<\/a>. Stick them on your phone, camera (most important to me..), suitcase, bike, kids.. :-). With these small devices you can find everything that really matters to you. They work on\u00a0bluetooth, but in my opinion, these ones have a huge advantage over other tracking devices in that anyone registered with the app can help you find what’s lost, and send you an exact location.\u00a0Here are all the details<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
